Mojitos!

October 2nd, 2008 by katie

We don’t drink many mixed drinks here in the Chaos household, generally preferring a nice glass of wine or an interesting beer. When we do have mixed drinks we tend to like simple concoctions with fresh lime wedges or other fruit. Mojitos fit the bill perfectly. Simply consisting of mint, lime juice, sugar, rum and club soda, mojitos are refreshing and light and perfect for a patio party during sultry summer nights. Lucky for us, it will be steamy here for several more months weeks. Tip your bartender well, but don’t be afraid to make mojitos at home. Once you get the hang of it they are pretty simple. The bar tool called for in this recipe is a muddler, but you can lightly crush your mint leaves however you see fit.

Mojito

makes 1, prep 3 min
  • 6 large mint leaves
  • 1/6 wedge of lime
  • 2 tsp sugar
  • 3 oz better quality white rum
  • crushed ice
  • 6-8 oz club soda
  1. Place mint leaves, lime wedge, and sugar in a high ball glass and muddle-just to gently crush the mint leaves to release the oils. It’s not necessary to grind the leaves to a pulp. The mojito in the picture was a little overzealously muddled.
  2. Add the rum and stir until the sugar is dissolved.
  3. Add crushed ice and club soda. Stir and garnish with sugar cane, lime wedge, or a mint sprig.

I found they are much easier to drink with a straw. Also, one of our local restaurants serves these with a sugar cane stick and I searched and searched but to no avail. Every store was all: What’s a mojito? What’s sugar cane? So, I had to get the rock candy stirrers instead-which were kind of cool anyway.

Come by Saturday and see if you can identify the movie title I had to act out in our game of Charades.

I am not a big fan of the mojito, but you make it look like the perfect drink! I just might have to try it! Love you photos!

I love a good mojito! Thank you, your pics are great.

I’m the same — I love wine and good beer. but I do love a good cocktail. my drink of choice is a gin and tonic, but I love mojitos too! never thought to make them at home. the classics are always the best!

i could drink my weight in mojitos but then i so wouldn’t be a pretty sight in the morning! or i couldn’t do charades…

    That looks awesome…

Umm, I tip pretty well…will you be my bartender?

I wouldn’t think the sugar cane sticks would add much sweetness, unless you chewed on them but they are pretty for drinks! Do you have an asian market (probably southeast asian) to look for sugar cane sticks?

I love beer but haven’t drunk it in a while. I’m currently HOOKED on tonic and lime (sans vodka since I’m working on losing some weight…)

Oh, I looooove mojitos! I’m actually growing two mint plants so I don’t have to keep running to the store!

Mine never come out as good as at a bar, I will have to try your recipe, I always eyeball mine so that’s probably the problem!! That drink looks great!

  8. I like booze

OK I’m a beer guy. I have a very short list of cocktails that I drink at all. I first discovered the mojito in New Orleans during Jazz Fest. They were GREAT!

I have tried to make them and I can’t seem to replicate them at all. I watched VERY closely as the bartender muddled the mint, added simple syrup, and used cabo tequila.

I have used EXACTLY the same ingredients and mine NEVER taste the same! What gives?

Now in all fairness, it’s not like they are horrible, and really I shouldn’t complain because I truly enjoy the ‘experiment’ part of it. I get to drink my mistakes!!

The only suggestion I can offer you is to use a top shelf rum instead of tequila and to only very gently bruise the mint leaves. Otherwise, best of luck to you, mine never taste like the bartender’s either! -katie
