Vietnamese Coffee
I love coffee. I love to have coffee throughout the day starting with a steamy, hot espresso in the morning. My favorite method of making iced coffee is to blend sweetened condensed milk with a pot of brewed coffee. You can keep this mixture in the fridge and pour over fresh ice as desired. The only problem is I can’t quite drink that much iced coffee. I like it more in single servings. Our local Vietnamese restaurant serves not only fantastic Pho but also sells these little Vietnamese coffee presses for about $5.
The method is the same, pour about 2 tbsp of sweetened condensed milk in a glass, add two to three spoonfuls of coffee with chickory to the press and pour boiling water to the top. Once the coffee has brewed, top it off a second time with boiling water and watch it brew again. Stir to combine the milk and coffee, then pour over a tall glass of ice. The coffee is smooth and strong, sweet and chocolatey. The perfect iced coffee for a hot afternoon in Houston in January.

Katie – I love, and I mean love, the Cafe du Monde coffee. I always have a can in the freezer, waiting for a treat. With sweetened condensed milk? Now it’s practically dessert.
Thanks for your kind words over at Simmer! Your own blog is lovely.

Don’t freeze your coffee! Freezing causes all the moisture inside the bean (or ground coffee) to turn into ice crystals, and forces out both moisture and the flavorful oils. When the coffee is thawed, the moisture and oils evaporate, and you end up with a coffee that’s rather flat and less tasty than it could be.
Please be kind to your coffee. Store it in an airtight container at room temp.

I am not sure about the sweetened condensed milk since I like my coffee unsweetened. But Cafe du Monde brings back nice travel memories.

Thanks for this great recipe – my teenagers love iced coffee and this is a huge hit with them — as good as Starbucks, according to my daughter. I use 10 cups of coffee, a whole can of sweetened condensed milk and 1/2 Tblsp of vanilla. Lasts for 2 days for 2 teenagers.
